Most neuropathies involve disruption of the nerve fibers and/or loss of the protective coating around the nerve called myelin. These damaged areas repair by nerve the protective cells around the nerve called Schwann cells repairing both the nerve fibers and the myelin. Often the activity of Schwann cells is not sufficient for repair to proceed. Specific electrical stimulation triggers activation of the Schwann cells allowing regeneration to proceed.
The StimPod was developed as a nerve locator to isolate the location of the nerve for procedures such as surgery to avoid injury to the nerve. The current from the StimPod when applied directly to the nerve causes the muscle that the nerve controls to contract in the same pulsing frequency as the current. This confirms the precise nerve location. It, however, produced yet another effect, stimulating Schwann cells to activate and cause regeneration.
This short video link shows the StimPod activating the ulnar nerve at the wrist. The nerve goes to the muscles that flex the small finger and also to the thumb. The muscles are contracting at the frequency of the electrical stimulation.
As there are other factors involved in neuropathy such as poor circulation to the nerve, other therapies such as laser or PEMF are used in coordination with the electrical stimulation to produce the best regeneration.
