Inflammation drives the progression both of bone loss and of cartilage loss. PEMF at specific frequencies activate adenosine receptors on cells. These receptors on osteoclasts, the bone cells which cause excessive bone loss in osteoporosis, quiet their excessive activity reducing bone loss. The cartilage loss in osteoarthritis is highly driven by inflammation but this process is reduced by PEMF.
Regeneration of both bone and joint cartilage is also stimulated by PEMF. This combination of slowing bone or cartilage loss and stimulating rates of regeneration makes PEMF an optimal therapy for osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.
